Nocturne

Nocturne

Oil on canvas

The lake behind my house at night.

Nocturnes have always fascinated me, they evoke such different feelings through their mood and atmosphere.

The biggest challenge for me was the balance between reality and art. In reality, there is almost no colour when you stand by this lake at night. Due to this, I chose to use more colours to create more visual interest, such as using more blues and purples in the sky. Maybe I went too far with this, and sometimes I think it's too blue, but I prefer this over it being too black and lifeless.

The moon was a fun challenge. My husband made a good photo of it and I tried to paint the details. The transition of the moonlight was enjoyable to paint where it quickly goes from a very light colour to a very dark one.
