Three Fish

Three Fish

Oil on canvas 30cm x 30cm

This was the first time I used oil paints.

I bought a wooden sculpture off Ebay then used it as my reference. This was so that I could have a three dimensional reference without needing to rely on a camera.

Additionally I bought three spotlights and put coloured filters on them and shone them over the sculpture. This was to create some interesting lighting that I could study.

Technical

I found it difficult to create a purple colour with sufficient saturation. This led to some of the colour where the blue and red interacts lacking some of the interest I would have liked to create for the piece. I now have better oil paints so if I tried this again I would be able to improve this aspect.

I was using a limited palette of colours to try to simplify the process. I was very pleased with the result of doing this, as I think it led to a more cohesive painting at the end, so I'd like to return to limited palette work in the future.
